As a teacher and a performer, appearance is important to me. Suddenly during the last few years, all the care I took with diet and exercise was erased when I looked in the mirror. Staring back at me was more of a crumpled paper bag than my face. I had jowls, "pleated" skin, wrinkles around my mouth, and loose skin on my neck that rivaled a turkey. The most hurtful remark came from my eighth grade students who said, "We still think you're so beautiful for being so old!" It was time to do something! After exploring the possibilities of dermabrasion, peels, and face lifts, a friend invited me to Dr. David Kamin's lecture on the dual wavelength laser. It was a revelation! Dr. Kamin is an ophthalmic-cosmetic surgeon who speaks of his 25 years of education and experience with quiet authority. His beautiful wife Donna, freely discussed her own procedure, evidenced by her baby-fresh skin. Both invited questions.

Pre-Procedure

Dr. Kamin explained the procedure in his usual gracious and attentive manner, including all the sensations and choices of procedural style. I chose an office procedure with oral medication, since I prefer to be conscious and aware.

The Procedure

Not counting the time spent allowing the Valium^tm and pain-blockers to do their peaceful work, the actual procedure took approximately 20 minutes. I felt very pleasant and relaxed, much to my surprise. I went home and spent the rest of the day icing my face. A peek in the mirror showed me a rosy colored and somewhat swollen face, not awful at all. I felt fine and slept well that night.

Day Two

Feeling a "little worse than yesterday," I came to the office for a checkup and at home applied ice every two hours for a half hour, interspersed with vinegar and water and Envious Concentrated Skin Therapy^tm and copper compound. I got through the day by reading and being visited by supportive, curious - and a little Envious - friends.

Day Three

Following instructions to use vinegar and cool water, I applied the copper compound to keep the skin moist. I could already see some of the beautiful work that had been done.

Day Four

The worst and the ugliest! Don't look at the pictures of yourself on this day until you're well past it. For me, there was tightness, some burning and pulling. I was advised by Dr. Kamin to get out and walk, please!

Day Five

A turning point, and an office visit with plenty of praise: I had cleansed and ointmented like mad. I felt so much better! I continued the Envious and the copper compound. (Did you know that new cells form only under water?)

Day Six

I went out into the world - to the pharmacy to buy some toilettries. People stared at my "beekeeper" look, but I was smiling inside.

Day Seven

Another office visit and an introduction to the wonderful new products to care for my new skin.

Day Ten

Starting to fall in love with my image in the mirror and hoping I would prove worthy of my glorious appearance: I was pink, not red anymore, with full lips, rich with natural color and smooth, tight skin.

Day Twelve

My real debut with makeup and a miracle. I took myself to lunch, graciously accepting the admiring looks and flirtatious conversation from men and women responding as much to how I felt.

Benefits

A lovely appearance, skin slightly thickened and, it is believed, more resistant to cancer. The laser procedure makes the skin more resilient and possibly slows the aging process. It also gives the inspiration to take better care of yourself to maintain the benefits. I'm nicer, too; I'm more confident.

Inconveniences

My cats weren't allowed to sleep with me for the first month because their fur could cause allergic reactions.

Nuisances

Jealous people who try to make me feel guilty and vain. "To hell with them!"

The Joys

Improved health in every way. I'm still shocked with delight when I see myself!
